Cyryx College kick starts Hour of Code in the Maldives with a workshop for SEN Teachers

Cyryx College kick started the global effort to introduce students to computer science with a special Hour of Code workshop conducted for special educational needs (SEN) teachers and educators. Thirteen teachers from various schools and the Maldives Autism Association participated in this workshop aimed at introducing coding and computer science as a key tool in SEN education.

The workshop, conducted under the Technology for All programme, was inaugurated by the Principal of Ghiyasuddin International School, Mr. Thoha Saleem, who talked about the importance of teaching coding at an early age, the opportunities for using Computer Science curriculums in SEN classes and he noted that these teachers “will be pioneers” in Maldives. Cyryx College Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Shareef, also spoke at the inauguration about his vision of bringing computing and technology know-how to everyone and how he plans to bridge the gap between those with knowledge and those in need, through this Technology for All – Sharing knowledge for All programme at the College. Mr. Shareef also thanked the teachers for taking the initiative to join the Cyryx College in its vision to make technology work for everyone and highlighted the importance of the work of SEN teachers and highlighted the College’s commitment to support the development of SEN education in the Maldives.

During this Hour of Code facilitated by Vice Rector, Academic Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Shareef, the teachers learnt about coding, programming and computer science and coded a number of simple programs designed to teach key coding skills using the Scratch platform.

Registration remains open for Hour of Code workshops, organized under its Technology for All, Sharing Knowledge for a Better Life program, held from 5 through 11 December in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. Hour of Code workshops teach basics of computer science with Code.org and Kodable’s programming tutorials and is designed to introduce and inspire children and adults.

The Technology for All is an initiative by Cyryx College aimed at enabling everyone in our communities to better their day to day life through sharing of knowledge. It focuses on empowering individuals, especially the elderly, girls and women and the young, with knowledge about key 21st century skills and technology know how, with which they could enhance the quality of their life and the quality of life of those around them, thereby increasing inclusiveness, social equity and ultimately quality of life of our communities as a whole. Cyryx College believes that everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to create technology, just like they learn photosynthesis, the digestive system, or electricity at school as children.
